Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills

< >

Having purchased the surviving 18" gauge locomotives from the Bicton Woodland Railway, the Royal Gunpowdert Mills are now creating a narrow gauge line at their site to show the role railways played in the development of the armaments industry. This is particularly appropriate since two of the ex-Bicton locos are the sole survivors of the Woolwich Royal Armaments complex that had an extensive rail system. These locos are "Woolwich" an 0-4-0T built by Avonside in 1916 and "Carnegie" a Bo-Bo diesel built by Hunslet in 1954.

Although not yet operational it is hoped to be running passenger services, probably on a 2' 6" demonstration line in 2005.
