The front plates were also spectacle plates on no's 1 Sutherland, 2 Derby, & 3 Pender (as built)- need to check if the some of the other earlier engines also had this feature - I think possibly number 4 Loch also did, but don't quote me on that. The rectangular windows were put in to allow better visibility at a later date.
