Winter "Track Bash" at Abergynolwyn

Between Christmas and New Year, a gang was at work tackling the point rodding at Abergynolwyn. The run was levelled, aligned and cleared the run, with broken A-frames and bases replaced. The levers controlling the west end points are now much easier to move; by coincidence, the original installer of the rodding run (back in 1976) visited on Monday. Many thanks to Justin Adams and MRFS for the report, and to Paul Knapton for the photographs below.

Loco 6's new safety valves

On Sunday afternoon (19th February), Dave Jones and Rob Frost brought Loco No. 6 "Duncan" to
Wharf for coal and then parked it on the loop opposite the Control Office,
with the comment that they were going to blow it up.

Those present can confirm that the new safety valves opened very
effectively and with a good deal of noise. When the injector was used they
also shut successfully. We were told that currently the valves
are in basic form, without the planned "semi-pop" feature.

Thanks are due to Phil Wheeler who has constructed the valves as a homework
project – more information is available on Phil’s web site.

Newly acquired loco on display at Apedale

Ruston & Hornsby Ltd 48DLZ 256314/48, which was donated by Woodhorn Colliery Museum at Ashington, Northumberland in 2005 has been moved to the new MRT site at Apedale Heritage Centre near Newcastle Under Lyme, arriving on 2nd March 2006 and accompanied by the two mines tubs donated at the same time. The loco has had a stand-up cab added as it was intended to be used for passenger haulage at a proposed 2’ gauge tourist line at Woodhorn; however this will be removed when time and funds permit and the loco restored to its original condition. Although already regauged to 2’ gauge, the work is incomplete, and work remains to be done on the braking system and bodywork. Meanwhile the loco has been placed on display at the rear of the Apedale Heritage Centre on a short section or rail constructed in December for this purpose.
