Hello to you all. I'm a new member to the forum and new to 16mm NG modelling. (I have been a 7mm standard gauge modeller for more than 35 years)

I am seriously considering a 16mm NG layout, possibly in the garden subject to the wifes planning approval of course. I am looking at purchasing my first loco kit in that scale and it will be the Slater's quarry loco.

I would like to have it battery powered with RC control if it's to be in the garden. Could anyone advise what motor/gearboxes are best suited to battery power and what is the best batteries to use. I would be happy to get around 4 hrs continuous running, if that's possible. (Trains would be no longer than 10 quarry type wagons, also no more than 2 or 3 Festiniog style coaches.

Looking forward to enjoying the forum and leaning about the NG scene

Right now I want to build a 16mm 32 set up in a garden 35x25 feet for a coal-fired Garratt NGG11 articulated loco. The garden is expendable in its present form. There are no constraints other than space and time, curved or otherwise, Space may be infinite but not my bit ,its 35x 25. Time, well short of infinite. Money spendable as time ' How about setting your sights on what is achievable with this set up i.e. v small garden, coal fired steam and enough money. Dream steam.

I'm thinking of starting an SM32 project, and would like to build my own track. The only thing I'm lacking is a track gauge, or preferably several track gauges! Are three-point gauges available for SM32 (or would gauges for O scale work)? Anyone know any sources?

Dear All,

I am one of the organisers for the Moseley Railway Trusts’ second annual Open Weekend at its Apedale (Nr Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffs) HQ. Our trust has recently made the press-release copied below.

Last year’s first event was a great success & exceeded our expectations by a long way. With our next gala, the primary aim is to display our vast railway collection & demonstrate various industrial trains during the weekend – it is unlikely that our passenger railway will be complete at this time. We hope have some vintage/classic vehicles present, to help add to the atmosphere & there should be at least one guest steam loco.

Our partners at the adjacent Apedale Heritage centre will be able to offer underground mines tours during the weekend.

The Apedale site is slowly developing & it is hoped that some of the visiting classic vehicles will be able to be seen in action.

In addition to welcoming entries of classic/vintage vehicles (forms on our website), we are also keen to add some model railways to our display. Perhaps any members of this group may be interested in exhibiting a narrow gauge theme layout?

I look forward to hearing from you soon & please see our website www.mrt.org.uk for further details about us.

Best regards,

Does anyone know how big the Bachmann 1:22.5 stuff scales out behind a Garratt, as they are fairly cheap if you buty the kits, and are they easy to convert to 32mm?

Got three model railways under construction all at various stages. Have a 7mm narrow gauge model (oo track) ready to go . . . . But, I would like a section of the track to run through a courtyard with the rails sunk into the roadway. i.e. a tramway. Has anyone any experience or advice on the best way to reproduce this effect.

My first thoughts were to cut plasticard strips, to place down the centre of the track and then plaster upto the outside edges.
I have been told if I use 00 track as I intended that this will look wrong. (chairs on the inside edge will look inaccurate) If I use narrow gauge line stock - will chairs still be wrong? How were rails fixed for tramways and sunken rails?

Any advice would be kindly accepted.

You may be able to help me. I've been pondering on how to fabricate a
miniature H0 track that would service a repair yard. I've been looking at a Jack Delano image of Proviso yard (1943) in [www.shorpy.com]

The image was discussed on the Yahoo group Steam Freight Car List (STMFC). There is a narrow gauge track for push carts servicing the repair tracks in the image foreground. I'd presume the track to be 12 inch. My chain of thought starts with an NMRA BR convention competition in October 2008. The rules are fluid, but in my minds eye there's a similar yard scene on a two by four foot H0 module, I'd assemble in the next few months.

I thought an 18 inch gauge line using a Z gauge Maerklin mechanism with an H0 OEM body might work. Not so smart compared with the numerous 2 foot gauge miniatures. A bit of flat forehead for me, as here in UK there are numerous manufacturers of model locomotive bodies of narrow gauge prototypes. I've been away from UK model railways for four decades and forgotten the little I knew.

So I started to learn the numbers, using [en.wikipedia.org] Good grief its 009/H0e/H0n30 in UK/EUR/US.

Looks like the Nigel Lawton stuff is do-able ;
The Greenwich Coupling [www.nigellawton009.com]

Next, I need to find some sort mixed gauge crossing where 9 mm crosses 16.5mm. Anyone know who makes one?

Further to my previous post has anyone now taken over saltford models as they seem to be the only company that could supply everything for industrial modelling ie locos, wagons and jubilee track. I cannot find anyone producing anything like what saltford models sold apart from a couple of kits from IP engineering and obviously binnie wagons. I've looked at the fen end pit layout website. Does anyone know any more about this wonderful layout?

I have used Sprat and winkle couplings on a 4 mm layout with great success.
I have now built a 7 mm narrow gauge layout and have broken all the rules and have some 10 inch raduis curve,. I am using the 4 mm sprat and winkle couplings, with some problems on the long wheel base stock as the hooks touch each other on the curves and derail the coaches any ideas. I did wonder if i fixed the base plate of the coupling with a screw and let it pivot .
The coupling could be centred with a thin plastic or metal tail that was fixed to the base plate and then between two pins above the axles the wagon or coach floor,. has anyone tried this?

I would like to build an industrial layout but I have a few queries.

Is SM32, 16mm scale the same thing?

I like a lot of the locos that saltford models make. Are they still available or does anybody else make a good range of industrial locos?

I would like to construct kits to start with as I haven't done any scratchbuilding before.

Does anybody make a good range of industrial wagons particurly Hudson skips, peat wagons or any mining wagons, manriders, etc?

Does anybody make any industrial buildings or unusual buildings such as gravel pit machines and diggers, etc, brickworks buildings, sewage works, cement works, etc. British outline as opposed to european.

I see a couple of companies sell locos and wagons that are convertible to enable them to run on 32mm track. If you compared these to an item made for 16mm scale would they be a different size.

Hello there.

I have just decided to build a narrow gauge model and wondered if anyone could recommend a book that i can buy with tips in?

where is the best place/company (online?) to buy rolling stock and track etc?

Also I am working out track layout possibilities and was wondering what is the smallest radius i can acheive in 009 and what sort of gradients locos could handle?

Many thanks for your help

Is there a set of definitive NG15 drawings, and even a book about these locomotives? The modelling bug is biting again, but I have 4 different sets of NG15 drawings and no idea (when they differ) which is right!
Thanks,
